Telesat Fellowship for Indigenous Youth

About the Fellowship:

The connectivity gap continues to disproportionately impact Indigenous communities in Rural and Remote areas. As Telesat continues its work to bring connectivity to those underserved communities, we are proud to support the next generation of Indigenous leaders in technology and engineering.

This award is aimed at increasing representation for Indigenous people in the engineering and technology professions, and supporting future Indigenous technicians, technologists, and engineers by providing tuition assistance and opportunities for paid internship placements at one of the Telesat Teleport facilities across Canada.


Number, Value and Duration of Fellowship

Two scholarships, valued at $5,000, are available to eligible students. Scholarships are available for bachelor’s or diploma-level programs for one year. In addition to the scholarship funds, recipients are also eligible for a $15,000 stipend and a paid internship at one of five Telesat teleport sites nationwide.


Eligibility

You are eligible if you:

  • Identify as Status Indian, Non-Status Indian, Inuit, or Métis;
  • Are a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada;
  • Are planning to continue full-time studies in your first bachelor's degree, diploma, or associate's degree program;
  • Are enrolled in an engineering or technology discipline applicable to Telesat’s operations (listed in the guidelines);
  • Are willing to relocate for a paid internship opportunity at one of the Telesat work locations. These sites are in Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal, Iqaluit, Allan Park Ontario, Gatineau or Telesat headquarters in Ottawa;
  • Have a minimum cumulative average of 70% (or equivalent) over the last three terms of available marks
