THE RICHARD J. SCHMEELK CANADA FELLOWSHIP
Established in 1985, the prestigious Richard J. Schmeelk Canada Fellowship has been offered to French and English speaking Canadians who wish to broaden their geographic and cultural horizons. The fellowship is available to students holding a bachelor’s degree who desire to pursue graduate studies in Canada’s second official language.
The Award
The Richard J. Schmeelk Fellowship awards recipients pursuing master’s degrees will be awarded up to $20,000 CAD annually for up to 2 years. Fellows pursuing PhD degrees will be awarded up to $10,000 CAD annually for up to 4 years. English-speaking students from outside Québec holding a bachelor’s degree pursuing a law degree at Université Laval are eligible for a scholarship of $10,000 per academic year, renewable for a maximum of $40,000 or up to four years
Cultural Exchange
The Schmeelk Canada Foundation aims to promote understanding and cooperation between Canada’s French and English speaking communities. French speaking applicants must be enrolled at The University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario), or at the University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta). English speaking applicants must be enrolled at the Université Laval (Quebec City) or at the Université de Montréal (Montreal) and its affiliated schools (Polytechnique Montreal and HEC Montreal).
Who is eligible?
All Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have completed a bachelor’s degree may apply. This program welcomes applications from students who can demonstrate through their work, or are able to articulate in their application, their commitment to advance the Schmeelk Canada Foundation’s values and support the cultural exchange of French and English-speaking Canadian provinces. Applicants will need to have been accepted into a master’s or PhD program in the fields of Business Administration, Computer Science, Engineering, Actuarial Sciences, Architecture, Political Science or Law at either Laval Université, the University of Calgary, Université de Montreal and its affiliated schools (Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal.), or Western University.
