THE RICHARD J. SCHMEELK CANADA FELLOWSHIP

Established in 1985, the prestigious Richard J. Schmeelk Canada Fellowship has been offered to French and English-speaking Canadian graduate students who wish to broaden their geographic and cultural horizons.The fellowship is available to students holding a bachelor’s degree who desire to pursue graduate studies in Canada’s second official language.

The Richard J. Schmeelk Canada Fellowship was established by Richard J. Schmeelk as a mean to promote harmony and collaboration between Canada’s French and English-speaking communities, and to encourage cultural exchanges. The Schmeelk Canada Foundation offers fellowship recipients a unique opportunity to expand their network and discover diverse opportunities country-wide.

The program closes on April 30th, 2025, at 1:00 PM EST.

Number, Value and Duration of Scholarships


Eight scholarships are available to eligible students pursuing full-time studies at a graduate level. The values and duration of those fellowships are:
  • At a Master level: 20,000$ CAD per academic year, renewable for up to two years
  • At a PhD level: 10,000$ CAD per academic year, renewable for up to four years
  • English-speaking students from outside Québec who hold a bachelor’s degree and are pursuing a law degree at Université Laval are eligible for a $10,000 scholarship per academic year, renewable for up to four years.
  • Travel grants may be available through the Schmeelk Canada Foundation for selected scholars. Applications must be submitted directly to the Foundation. For more information, please visit the website.

ELIGIBILITY

You are eligible if you::
  • Are fluent in English and French and are 40 years of age or younger
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree and plan to begin full-time studies in a Master’s or PhD program in the Fall 2025 term.
  • Not receiving a salary or special allowance from employer while studying
  • Must have Canadian citizenship or a permanent residency status
